It is you who are drowning!" He made a ghastly effort to reach the raft; I saw he could not succeed, so I let him alone. His feeble hand stretched out only struck the water; and once more he turned his dying eyes on mine. One more triumph was left me. A boat at this moment was lowered from the ship. I pointed to it: he could well-nigh see it, he could almost hear the cars. "Not to save you," I said; "you will be dead when it comes, you are fast sinking. I" could save you, but sec, I will not stir a finger." His lips moved "O God!" That was all I heard, but I shall never forget his look as the gurgling waters closed over him. There was something in that face of agony which brought to my heart the only compunction it ever felt. It was not so much the pain of death as the anguish of help denied, and the despair in seeing aid so near that came too late for him. With one finger I could have saved him, and he knew it; and I saw his very agony had a wonder in it that would have stung me, could I have felt anything else save hate and gratified revenge. The boat came, friendly hands were stretched out to me, and I was saved. I gave way to my own exhaustion when I felt myself in safety, and it was long before I recovered the horrors of that dreadful night. "Are you the only one saved?" asked the captain, kindly "There was another man who sank just before we reached him," remarked the officer, "though we rowed hard to save him."
